Divorce causes major issues with health insurance benefits. Many families have employer provided and/or paid for health insurance benefits that cover the entire family. It is not uncommon to see situations where the other spouse is a stay at home parent, with absolutely no access to health insurance benefits, or employed at a job with either no health insurance benefits available or those benefits available at a substantial cost. After a divorce, the spouse with the family health insurance coverage can no longer cover the other parent. They are no longer “family” members who can take advantage of one health insurance policy. How to then ensure that everyone stays insured does become an issue for negotiation and/or divorce litigation.,'

Good evening Rebecca

Thank you for your inquiry. We are one of the groups of professionals that assist people with issues related to separation and divorce. I suggest that you contact one of the mediators listed on our website (under "Find a Mediator") or visit the Family Mediation Canada website at http://www.fmc.ca and look at their Find a Mediator page. Their page covers all of Canada so you will want to select "NS" from the State/Province pull down menu to see all the members located in Nova Scotia. Not all of the FMC members are in fact working as mediators so you may wish to call one or two located in your part of the province to ask. If you have any difficulties, please do not hesitate to call me for further information. I can be reached toll free at 1-877-418-7555.

All the best,

Hi
I am wondering if you are the correct people who assist in separation and divorce agreements. My husband and I are separating and can't afford lawyers but don't know where or how to proceed.

Thanks
